March Radness: Lakey Peterson

Back to Articles

Just like the tournament whose nickname we’re shamelessly—yet unapologetically—riffing on, March Radness continues! Earlier this month, we introduced you to 4x World Wake Surfing Champion, Ashley Kidd, and now we’re stupidly stoked to have ya meet our latest Blenders sunglasses ambassador.

Say what’s up to ascendent surfing talent, Lakey Peterson!

Celebrating Women’s History Month With Lakey Peterson

She’s a Pro Surfer. Philanthropist. U.S. Olympic Hopeful. Blendz Brand Ambassador.

Yup. Lakey’s doing it all. And her journey to this point has been nothing short of incredible.

A native to Santa Barbara and the California coast, Lakey took up surfing at the tender age of five before swiftly transitioning onto the competitive scene. In 2009, she claimed the NSSA Women’s 18 and Under Open National Title by achieving the first-ever aerial maneuver in a women’s surfing competition. She followed that with a friggin’ perfect run for the 2011 USA Surf Team that culminated in a massive inverted front-side air reverse—a touchpoint in the women’s sport. And all that came before serious bragging rights as the 2012 U.S. Open of Surfing’s champion in her rookie year.

She’s no flash-in-the-pan wonder, though. Our sunglasses partnership with Lakey arrives as she’s fresh off a torrid 2018 WSL campaign in which she placed 1st at Corona Bali Protected and Roxy Pro Gold Coast; 2nd at Corona Open J-Bay and Oi Rio Pro; and 3rd at Surf Ranch Pro. The effort produced her finest finish to date—2nd overall for the year behind only Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore on the WSL Jeep Leaderboard.

But it isn’t purely her work on the surf that’s making waves. Lakey’s a staunch advocate for those in need, endeavoring alongside Southern California hospitals to stem the tide of childhood cancer. Her philanthropic efforts extend to H4O (Hands4Others), where she works to enhance the implementation of clean water systems in third-world countries, and to the Advisory Board for Ocean Lovers Collective and the Student Conservation Association, where she strives to promote environmental guardianship.

“Lakey’s profound commitment to making the most of every moment—both in and out of the surf—makes her an ideal brand representative for Blenders,” says our head boss man here at Blenders, Chase Fisher. “She’s a boundary-pushing phenom who’s reshaping the public’s expectations of the sport on both the men’s and women’s sides. Her ascent has been unparalleled—and we’re stoked to be along for the ride.”

Big things lie ahead for Lakey. With the first-time-ever addition of surfing to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and her status in the American surfing ranks, she’s poised to potentially represent the United States on the 2020 Olympic team.
