You’ve heard it before but it can never be said enough: “Carpe diem!”
Really. You’re about to be or are in your friggin’ 20s… if you’re gonna make moves, now’s the time to make them. (If you’ve just turned 30 or so, that’s fine, we’ll give ya a mulligan.) The world’s a vast place and you need to get out there while you still can. So, pack your bags, grab your best pair of shades, and travel to as many of the below destinations as you can.
Whether it’s Patagonia, the Croatian coastline, or a jewel of a Greek Island, you won’t be disappointed….
Budapest may not be the first destination that pops into your head, but it should be among the top of your list thanks to its rich history of architectural and romantic excellence (the views from its many bridges are killer). It’s also a world capital for cuisine.
Oh, and if you drink a little too much one night? (We’re gonna guess that’s likely.) There’s always Budapest’s famed Turkish baths, which are conveniently considered to be one of the Earth’s best hangover cures.
2. Patagonia, Argentina
Ready to head way the hell on out there? If you’re into adventure, how can you not visit a place that has an entire activewear line named after it?
A picturesque train trip from Buenos Aires, Patagonia is jaw-droppingly gorgeous and houses incredible mountains, lakes, wildlife, and even awesomely accessible glaciers. As the NYTimes has called it, it’s a “magnet for wanderers.”
3. New Zealand
C’mon, this one had to make the list. New Zealand is one of those ultimate destinations that’s so ridiculously stunning in its beauty that it seems totally unreal. While director Peter Jackson helped make the southwestern Pacific Ocean country extra-famous in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, this island nation south of Fiji and Tonga has always been celebrated for its remote and mysterious allure.
OK, you’re less likely to need your sunglasses here, but that’s completely okay. Iceland is a treasure trove of spectacular vistas that may literally change the way you look at the world. Really—we’re talking hot springs, waterfalls, rolling hills and staggering mountains, and even volcanic fields. Catching the stars here on a cloudless night—or even the Northern Lights—can be life-altering… particularly if you have a special someone beside you.
5. Santorini, Greece
Part of the Aegean Sea’s Cyclades Islands and the most visited island in Greece, the volcanic Santorini is a wildly popular tourist attraction as a result of its delectable dining options, fine wineries, and menagerie of dope ass beaches. There are beaches offering sublime snorkeling, nude beaches (getting that beach body ready just got extra important) and, of course, the black pebble beach of Kamari. It’s all positively dreamy.
6. Ibiza, Spain
Considering we’re talking about traveling in your 20s, how can we leave Ibiza off? It’s one of the globe’s top clubbing spots, after all—Mike Posner knows something about that—and it’s brimming with bars, booze and debauchery. We mean it. Don’t come here to relax. Instead, jet set here for internationally renowned DJs, flowing spirits, and, thanks to its stature as one of the four Balearic Islands, some unforgettable scenery. Whether its forests or coastline coves, Ibiza’s got you covered.
This place is a playground. Act accordingly!
Croatia is a burgeoning European summer vacation spot. The inland capital, Zagreb, offers some sick nightlife, and the Plitvice Lakes are a tantalizing tourist getaway. National parks are dotted throughout, too. The coastline in particular ups the ante for those searching for a good time, though, offering sweeping vistas, pristine waters, alluring islands, and some wicked nightlife all its own. There’s a ton to do, so make a strong itinerary in advance.
At least one of these above seven destinations are bound to be calling to you, so start saving now! The 20s are arguably the best time to travel. Oh, and don’t forget to check out everything the good ‘ole USA has to offer. Few countries can match the diversity of our 50 states!
