September’s a damn fine sports month. The return of football (college and pro), tons of collegiate Olympic sports, this past week’s inaugural WSL Surf Ranch Pro, and now, the Vans Park Series African Continental Championships this weekend!
Vans South Africa is teaming with The Shred to bring to life Cape Town's first public skate bowl. The first event of its kind in Africa, top men and women skateboarders throughout the region are convening to kick all kinds of ass.
The series moving to Africa is particularly notable because the continent has traditionally lacked what we in this part of the world would consider quality skating facilities. There’s been relatively little development on this front, so the genesis of the VPS African Continental Championships should have an exceptionally positive effect on the region as far as growing interest in the sport.
As long as the men and women hopefuls meet their regional eligibility and provide the entry fees, they could be on their way to the Vans Park Series World Championships—and even potentially be in line to score a spot on the 2019 VPS Pro Tour.
