A Squad Called Blendz: Meet Our Product Innovation Team

We recently featured our Branded Content Manager, Katy, and this month we’re excited to introduce you to the force behind your fav Blendz designs.

That’s right. We’re pleased to give ya a glimpse inside the minds of our inspired innovation and design duo, Julius and Desiree.

Tell the good people out there about what you do here at Blenders and how instrumental you are to ensuring our latest collections are as fire as possible.

I'm going to level with you, I have a ton to learn but that's why I love the position I have here at Blenders. Innovation is all about how to make what you've already done that much better. It's a constant reminder that nothing is set in stone and that everything (even us as human beings) has another stage of evolution that it can go through. How can I introduce new technologies to make an existing collection much better than it once was? How can I modify something to better fit our brand? How can we work on our weaknesses to better strengthen not just the products, but us as a whole? But most of all, how can we take the feedback from all avenues of the biz to create something everyone loves? I help shape the way people view and experience the world and I try my best to make sure that experience is the best it can be.

There’s a zombie outbreak in San Diego. Who on the Blenders team do you pair up with to survive, and why?

Patrick, our photographer, because he always has the cannon on him.

Imagine you have your own “Freaky Friday” moment. Who in the Blenders Crew are you wanting to swap places with?

Brian, our CFOO. You know how Dos Equis has their "Most Interesting Man"? He's the new younger one they replaced the OG grey haired duded with… OR - Justin, our Sales Manager, because he's the Lil Dicky of our office and I can definitely dance like Chris Breezy.

What’s that “bucket list” travel destination that you’ve never been to?

Japan, hands down. Being a bit of a car guy, I'd love to see and experience the automotive culture that our friends over in Japan have created.

Fiji, Tahiti, Samoa, Canada, Ethiopia and Bahrain all get mentions though! One day.

Do you find yourself looking to any specific source(s) for inspiration when you’re designing the latest Blenders looks?

Can't give all of my secrets away, but I definitely take a look at a lot of sneaker releases as I go through my own ideation processes. There are sooooo many sick colorways that are released and I love the use of material combinations / technologies that are always constantly being used or reinvented. Shout out to life too! There's nothing more inspirational than experiencing life for all of its wonders and all of its simplicities. Take the time to notice everything that you already see and everything that's fresh to your eyes, then use that to inspire you to create, beloved!

As Product Innovator for Blenders Eyewear, it's my responsibility to identify key trends within the industry and leverage them to drive our product line(s) forward. On the front end, a big part of that is Trend analysis. This research helps to ensure that the designs we produce stay unique to the brand, but still in alignment with trends emerging within the marketplace. Once decisions have been made as to what will be produced, my role becomes more about execution and bringing the designs to life. I do that through the development of technical packages aka "techpacks" which are essentially road maps that aid in the physical production of the styles you see online and in our flagship store. This process of going from nothing to something that people ultimately wear day to day is not easy but is also probably one of the most satisfying things to witness from a design perspective.

What would you say is your favorite aspect of living in San Diego?

The weather! Nobody's ever died here because it's too cold.

What’s that “bucket list” travel destination that you’ve never been to?

Tonga—it’s a really tiny island southeast of Fiji.

Favorite movie, album, and/or concert you’ve ever been to?

09-28-17 Bonobo in Pioneer Town.

Do you find yourself looking to any specific source(s) for inspiration when you’re designing the latest Blenders looks?

Definitely Instagram models, but mostly boy bands from the 90's (i.e. Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, Nsync).
